Conservative Collectivism

Third, there already is a free market in labor - it's referred to as free trade. The very point of free trade is that workers don't have to move across borders because products can. The movement of labor is not part of the free market because nations are, in a very real sense, the property of their citizens. The implicit goal of any modern, democratic government is supposed to be the welfare of its citizens, a goal that is actually explicit in our Constitution - that item about promoting "the general welfare," which refers to Americans, not the entire world.

In a free market I have the right to sell my goods or services in competition with Target, WalMart, whoever. That does not give me the right to walk into a Target or WalMart and sell my goods on their property in competition with them.

That's from an e-mail sent to John Derbyshire, emphasis in the original.

So, so many problems with the above quote.

Mr. Hueter,

I recently stumbled on your blog while searching for answers as to why the census bureau was taking GPS coordinates of my parents house. I was curious, did you ever get a convincing reason or explanation of why they thought it necessary to obtain such precise locations on each citizen's house? I might be paranoid but, my parents, specifically, my mother, is a voracious reader of all sorts and kinds of "controversial" material (I recognized the material you mention myself). I haven't heard of anyone else I know getting this treatment and I thought I would've heard something about this by now from someone I know. Who knows.

Alan, you're referring to this Census GPS post?

No, no one has offered a reason why the Census Bureau needs to have a GPS reading for every American's front door. I have my suspicions and they don't need to presuppose the existence of a criminal conspiracy (well, any more of a criminal conspiracy that the government already is) to be worried. This is all likely "for your own good" to they have better data on us.

Be wary.
