Neil Gaiman @ BookPeople

Though I've never read a word of his other than stopping by his journal one time on a whim, I went with some friends to hear him read from his new book Anansi Boys, interact with the crowd, and sign whatever was placed in front of him. He was scheduled to appear at 7pm on the 26th; a friend and I got there at 6:45 with enough time to for him to by a copy and join the others who made it there earlier.

My batteries died just as he started his reading, so I didn't get anything from that portion of his appearance. But I ran out to buy a set and came back well before the signing began.

He's a funny guy with that classic British ironic look on things. My friends remarked they were happy to see his attitude and style aren't limited to his written words. He had little trouble getting grins and laughs from the crowd.

During the Q&A, he revealed

  • Beowulf was in production or about to begin
  • he thinks the closer a movie is to the comic that it is based on, the better
  • the trend he believes he started with (I'm paraphrasing from an incomplete memory) stories published a part of a time sequentially has devolved into too many stories being drawn out with only a little plot meat published per syndication (yeah, I'm having trouble remembering this clearly)

I considered buying one of his works to read him for myself, but between the two friends present I can borrow from them first and see what I think before plopping down the cash.

I did buy the graphic novel version of V is for Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. I'm eager to read this one.

Mr. Gaiman's writeup of the event is here. My friends managed to get in and out of the signing line relatively quick, so we weren't around when Anasi Boys sold out. It helps having someone get there early to grab a ticket before the other 600 show up!
