Live-Shot's Cyber Hunting Ranch

Via the Mises blog, I hear about John Underwood's LIVE-SHOT, a system that says "you can control a pan/tilt/zoom camera and a firearm to shoot at real targets in real time." The animals available to hunt are:

  • Aoudad (Barbary Sheep)
  • Blackbuck Antelope
  • Sheep (Corsican, Mouflon, and crosses)
  • Wild Hog
  • as well as axis, fallow, and red stag "on a limited basis"

And, as expected, the state is worried worried worried:
Texas officials are not quite sure what to make of Underwood's Web site, but may tweak existing laws to make sure Internet hunting does not get out of hand.

"This is the first one I've seen," said Texas Parks and Wildlife Department wildlife director Mike Berger. "The current state statutes don't cover this sort of thing."

And since that is a dangerous loophole tragedy waiting to happen, I expect the Texas Legislature to slap together a law to "fix" it.
Underwood, an estimator for a San Antonio, Texas auto body shop, has invested $10,000 to build a platform for a rifle and camera that can be remotely aimed on his 330-acre (133-hectare) southwest Texas ranch by anyone on the Internet anywhere in the world.

The idea came last year while viewing another Web site on which cameras posted in the wild are used to snap photos of animals.

"We were looking at a beautiful white-tail buck and my friend said 'If you just had a gun for that.' A little light bulb went off in my head," he said.

does this mean we can now hunt things in the wild from the comphort of our own homes. this is funny cause you know that there is going to be someone out there that is going to kill the animal have it stuffed or skinned and turned into meat and they wont have acctually seen the animal (except on camera) until it arrives in a box.
Soon no one will ever have to leave their house for anything at all. we'll take vacations from our bedrooms and have sex with our wives via machines connected to our nervous system. quiet docile and plugged in... and thats when they get you.

hey,

I am a huge hunter, My dad, his dad, his dad, and my brothershave always loved hunting. Its a great thing, but this website is a travesty. I love hunting for the pure sport. Man vs. nature. And we eat everything we kill, and its been some of my best memories ever. This site decimates any amount of purity and sport that hunting has. THis is the worst idea ever and the guy who made it up ought to be gutted with a buck knife for discracing one of the most natural and pure and awsome things life has to offer. Forget about the state being worried. Every respectable hunter who would love to beat the tar out of this slap-dic. Please leave hunting alone, you are skewing it into a digital debauchery of somethethng that many respectable men have loved, cherished, and maintaind for many years. Go play dungeons and dragons you loser. YOu suck at life, and you are really making us real hunters, who have respect and admiration for the beatuful animals they hunt look bad to the folks that don't hunt or just dont know much about it. Tell you what though, you jump out front of that platform and i would consider trying your bullshit idea. please do us all a favor, and strangle yourself with your mouse. Thats a real good idea, have you thought of that. Anyway, please try to think less, its bad for the team. You suck.

Sincerely yours, Paul from Texas.

ps-STOP SCREWING UP WHAT REAL HUNTERS LOVE SO MUCH...GO DIE. LONG LIVE REAL HUNTERS, AND IF YOU SEE THE GUY WHO THOUHT OF THIS CRAP, YOU MIGHT WANT TO DO US ALL THE HONOR OF REMOVEING HIM FROM THE MILKYWAY GALAXY.

Paul, your admiration for the traditions of normal hunting is something I'd like to see cultivated in more Americans. I've hunted twice with my father and even though we bagged nothing during those many hours, it was still enjoyable.

However, your vituperation doesn't make sense. This isn't going to replace normal hunting *because* it is so far removed from the action that makes hunting so unique. This isn't going to encroach upon tradional hunting because most people prefer to be right there, pulling the trigger. It's for people who want to try something different, who can't venture out into the forest to hunt, or who think it may offer a different kind of challenge.

Your fantasies of attacking and killing the people behind this are sickening. Your violent hatred for the people behind it is dishonorable. Get over yourself.

You are a Jerk who deserves to be kicked in the balls till you die. Im sick of this idea and I think you should find somthing better to do. If I ever hear someone say Cyber hunting is a good idea all kick them in the balls so many times they will never reproduce and cause more sick minded children to ever be on this earth again. I think paul had a great idea about you saving us the trouble and strangleing yourself with the mouse. If you want to try to make yourself feel better by saying "Violent hatred for the people behind it is dishonorable" then I have a question for you. What is worse fighting someone hand to hand or sitting miles away and clicking a mouse to blow them away with a 357? You tell me. You sick bastered.

In case anyone was wondering, that hollow rattling sound was Mr. Findle's mind trying to come up with something useful to say. His only fragment of clarity comes at the end of that peculiar exercise in testical crushing fantasy, but it has no relation to the concern at hand.

I'm not saying it is better FOR EVERYONE to use this service. I'm not saying EVERYONE will value it more than traditional hunting. I'm saying let people hunt as they see fit because that choice is theirs, not yours or mine.

Ok, this is ridiculous. This isn't hunting, it's some kind of grotesque video game. The only relation to hunting that this disgusting game has is that it involves wildlife being killed. When you think about it, how is this similar to hunting at all? All you do is move a mouse and click a button and something dies. This is animal cruelty 100%. Being right there in the forest where wildlife actually HAS A CHANCE is what makes hunting a sport, but this is just a bunch of creeps getting satisfaction from killing a living thing at the click of a button. It's wrong and should be stopped immediately!

Pat, when did you earn the crown of He Who Decides What Is Hunting For Everyone Else? Was the application hard to fill out?

More importantly, if this "should be stopped immediately" then I challenge you to follow through with your convictions. How about you actually go out there and physically stop these people. You know what you'd be doing? You'd be ASSAULTING individuals who had done nothing to you. It would be entirely within their right to kick your fucking ass in self-defense.

Suppose you are too lazy, afraid, or busy to do this yourself and would rather have a third party do it for you. I suppose you'd call the cops and ask them to do it. Here's a blinding moment of clarity for you: they'd be JUST AS guilty of assault as you'd be.

Perhaps some of the people who use this service are sickos who get off on killing things and like the idea of doing so with minimal effort. This service can't be that satisfying, though. To start off with, you miss out on the 360º sounds of the outdoors, the smells, and the physical sensation of touch. This is an experience in killing - no doubt - but it is also a neutered experience. In any event, as long as these people confine their activities to unclaimed animals I say let them do what they want.

Of course, you completely ignore the rest of the customer base who want to use the service as a stand-in for the real thing, people who can't trek into the wilderness. I'm not going to take issue with them for wanting to remain fundamentally responsible for the shot, even if it's far removed from the field.

You are really kinda dumb, my friend. When I said it had to be stopped, I meant legislative-wise. Yes, that's right, I know it may be hard to believe but LAWS STOP THINGS, USE YOUR FUCKING HEAD. Why the hell would you think I meant physically beating a person to stop cyber hunting? Also, I really couldn't give a flying fuck about consumer bases. The fact is that this is not anything near hunting at all, so one can hardly say it's a "substitute for the real thing". It's more akin to a disgusting video game involving blatant animal cruely (An action that is AGAINST the LAW. Get it? Laws serve purposes.). Again, use your head.
