The Austin City Council is considering proposals to ban panhandling in downtown Austin.The council is also mulling over tightening "public order laws" such as sleeping on sidewalks and roadside soliciting.

The Austin Resource Center for the Homeless, or ARCH, recently opened downtown. Critics say the ARCH is the reason for the surge of that type of activity.
Front Steps, based on the belief that all people deserve the dignity of a safe place to call home, seeks to end homelessness by providing shelter, affordable housing and community education.

"What their approach is, is to address a symptom and not address the core issue. I guess advocating the removal of the collective yoke off the backs of businesses and individuals is not going to fly with these guys.
