I was watching C-SPAN yesterday after work and it had switched from it's coverage of the House to the National Press Club. Interestingly, it was rebroadcasting the Tuesday announcement of the formation of the Godless Americans Political Action Committee. It's purpose:
GAMPAC endorses candidates for public office who support the First Amendment separation of church and state; defend equal rights and protections for our nation's godless Americans; inform our community of the voting records of their elected representatives on issues of concern; and support our goal of having "a place at the table" in formulating public policy. In addition, GAMPAC will facilitate the training and development of those godless Americans seeking to bring their organizations talents to the field of electoral politics.
Doubtless, this formally adds one more to the list of "special interests" the government will have petitioning it for changes. And even though my regard for voting and democracy continues to wane, these people have got a great and important task ahead of them. There is a serious bias against nonreligious and atheist political candidates these days. It's an unmentioned insitiutional adversion to candidates and politicans and people who don't believe in mainstream religious beliefs or have none altogether.
I wish GAMPAC luck in accomplishing it's goals.

My favorite tidbit was from Foxnews, I believe during Cavuto, something along the lines of 'additionally, the organization may be able to influence candidates by extracting promises to be fulfilled once in office by threatening to endorse them.'
My giggling is matched only by my support for GAMPAC.
During the news conference, that exact subject was discussed, probably longer than any other. One of the directors/chairpersons/etc. mentioned that endorsements can be a potent passive weapon (and I'm paraphrasing here): "Just look what happened to Howard Dean after Al Gore endorsed him."

According to Rastus these here Ten Commandments are just religious dogma shit. The claim that our great nation’s laws are designed and built on these Ten Commandments is just plain crap! Commandments one thru five are just Gods threats to the flock. Six through nine are just your simple, basic don’t kill, fuck around, steal or lie. Ten is the biggie for the fat cats. Don’t want what I have, its mine and I intend to keep it even if I have to violate commandment six to protect my stuff. Now, I don’t care if you covet my wife just don’t touch the bitch.
Jesus Christ, I wish I had your wheels and I’d kill to do your wife next Sunday at your mom’s bar-b-cue…….. God damn! I just violated 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10!
I wish I'd known about this organization long before now; although I have known about a similar organization, "The Brights," for quite a while. As a lifelong atheist, I'm thrilled there are others to align with. Fortunately in the anti war movement, atheists are welcome amongst our "believer" friends. The common thread of peace is usually enough to bind us. But I do have a problem with the term, "godless Americans." For me it is polarizing and illogical. Just as "home"less presumes home, and "speech"less presumes speech, doesn't "god"less presume "god?" One can't be less something that does not exist. What's wrong with American Atheists or Atheistic Americans or Atheistic Patriots? I'll pose this question to the organization, to which I'm grateful for its dedication and goals. Milazzo
Posted by: Milazzo on March 14, 2004 05:00 AMI concur, it is a fairly explicit title, more than likely the primary reason for thier 'clandestine strength' of threat. Whether or not they gain more political influence being a anti-supporter or if they were an aptly, more civily named atheist organization is yet to be seen.
As for your linguistic questions, no, 'godless' does not necessarily presume 'god' as much as a reference to a common concept. However, it is a denial of such concept, instead of a recognition of the absence of the concept to begin with; in other words, it's an assault rather then a stance.
Posted by: ~TM on March 14, 2004 10:03 PMThis is truly a sad day when we as Americans boldly proclaim our "right" to be unbelieving atheists. Have we forgotten that Scripture tells us “blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD?” But it seems we have become like the children of Israel when the prophet Jeremiah said “…This is a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the LORD their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.” My first call is to Christians (those who profess to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior) to live lives worthy of this calling. If we would just live what we profess to believe, groups like these would no ammunition to question the fact that we are indeed “one nation under God” instead of one nation undermined. Thanks for listening.
Posted by: Rev. Peter Walters on April 6, 2004 07:50 AMMr. Walters, your first sentence sounds as if you believe humans DON'T have the right to choose their theology (or lack thereof). Perhaps you could elaborate. At the very least, I find your comment contemptible because you think your Good Book is the end-all of truth and I should follow it merely because it exists, says some nice things, and others believe in it.
I prefer to have *reasons* to believe in something, rather than relying on faith. But exercise your beliefs as you want. You are free to do so.
That of course, being the very thing you seemingly seek to undermine.
