US vs EU on Civil Liberties

The United States government, through the direction of George Bush, has put in place restrictions on some of the public's civil liberties. Most of these restrictions only affect those who ally themselves with terrorists (and therefore tend to be of certain races, religions, and politics). Some of the new policies affect a wider variety of people.

But nothing the Bush government has done can approach the sheer vileness the European Union is achieving. European commentators smugly pointing out the US's civil rights violations aren't paying enough attention to the events in their own backyard.

Our Bill of Rights may be under pressure, but as least we have one to violate. The majority of the Continentals and a large swath of Britons don't seem to care one bit about individual rights. Such is the pity and a demonstration of their hypocrisy.

It's crap, no one noticed it yet because ... well they produce a lot of paper down there in Brussel ^^' *lame excuse but it's true ~~ It's impossible to keep track*
But on the other hand it has not been used by now to arrest citizens, if they did that, we would have noticed and they wouldn't have survived it. *shrugs*
About the EU-phobia... well why don't you just view the EU as the United States of Europe and Britain just as the Southern States who need to be forced to join? No not due to invasion or a civil war ... *sarcasm* But on the other hand you think the same of your own Federal Government as long as it's not bout foreign policy *tut tut tut*

Well then maybe more people need to exercise your democratic systems and demand a more efficient system and not let up until you get one. Otherwise, laws like these will get passed until the end of time and one day you'll run afoul of them and wonder what happened to your freedom.

The ability of the EU to give itself the ability to issue arrest warrents for people on the basis of "racism" and "xenophobia" or something as absurd as opposing the Euro is not something to lightly shrug off. That is an entirely different level of rights violation. As distasteful and wrong as some of the recent US laws are, they are at least aimed at curbing terrorism. These new policies don't punish anything you could call a crime. They are directly aimed at speech supression (and mostly political speech), whereas the US laws require some evidence of connection to terrorism.

I can't view the EU in the same light as the US or the UK. The US is fundamentally different from both governments because it has a written Constitution that sets in stone (and makes it very hard to change) the rights the government has, the rights the citizens have, and the rights the states have. It also doesn't attempt to govern and regulate your life as much as those other systems do.

From my standpoint, if the Confederates wanted to seceed from the Union, they should have been able to. My knowledge of the Civil War isn't good, so there may be extenuating circumstances I'm not aware of, such as economic or physical damage the Confederates may have caused before war broke out.

Mhm and I thought you were the elite whenever it comes down to matters of political correctness... ^.-
Ah but serious, you're right with saying that the US differs from the EU because of its constitution... we don't have a written constitution yet XD And that is exactly why the technocrats in Brüssel have so much power, far too much illegitimate power, while the EU parliament, those elected representatives have few till none. ~~
But ther's already a multinational convention workin on an EU constitution and trust me it'll be as good or even better than yours ^^
You must not forget whenever talking bout the EU that it was first only thought as a trade/economical institution to monitor the steel and coal industry to prevent a secret rearmament like in WWI or WWII and to build up trust among the "OLD" Europian nations *wink*. So it is indeed a long-winded process with a lot of faults until we reach the goal of a United Europe, with all its diversities as the states in the US have among each other. *Don't tell me Texas agrees on everything California wants etc.*
I'm not an optimist but to aim for such big visions you need to be a bit optimistic at least or you'll give up to soon.

Sorry for double posting but I just wanted to mention that we are aware of the crap Brüsel produces... to be honest it's a running gag throughout of Europe XD
But we can't do anything unless we got our constitution and the parliament in full power to take over the legislative function.
What you see right now is what happenes when bureaucrates get hold of the legislature, let this be a warning to you folks ~~

I understand.

And Hell no. Texas generally has much different goals and tactics to accomplish what it wants.
